Centering the clay

Centering the Clay

Centering is pressing the clay into the middle of the wheel so it spins smoothly and is ready to shape.

Opening

Opening

Opening is making the a small hole in the clay while it spins, creating the base for your pot.

Pulling up the walls

Pulling Up the Walls

Pulling up the walls means gently lifting the clay upward with your hands to make the pot taller and thinner.

Trimming the bottom

Trimming the Bottom

Trimming removes the extra clay from the base, giving the pot a neat, smooth, and balanced finish.

Decorating with coloured slip

Air-conditioned studio. Introduction to Wheel Throwing – Beginner Pottery Class (Brisbane)
Get a taste of what it’s like to throw pottery on the wheel in this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop in Brisbane. This class is perfect for anyone curious about pottery and makes a great creative experience for individuals, families, or friends.
If the scheduled time doesn’t work for you, feel free to message or email me — private bookings or alternative times may be available depending on my schedule.
About the Workshop
Duration: 2. 5 hours
Minimum age: 15 years
Experience level: No experience required
In this session, you’ll learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing, including:
Centering the clay
Opening and widening
Compressing the base
Pulling up the walls
Shaping your pot
Trimming excess clay
Decorating with coloured slip
It’s recommended to remove jewellery and have short nails; however, throwing can still be done with longer nails.
With only seven wheels available, this small-group workshop offers personalised, one-on-one guidance, giving you plenty of time to practise and refine your skills.
During the session, students will have the opportunity to create one or two pieces, depending on individual pace and how time is divided between making and decorating.
At the end of the workshop, you’ll select your finished piece(s), which will be dried, bisque-fired, glazed, and glaze-fired by your instructor.
⏳ Please allow 6–8 weeks for completion, as each piece is fired twice.
What You’ll Get
Expert guidance throughout the session
Hands-on experience using a pottery wheel
The opportunity to create up to two ceramic pieces
The number of completed pieces depends on individual pace and how time is allocated between making and decorating
Pottery Collection Policy
Once your pieces have been fired and are ready for collection, I'll send you a notification to let you know.
Please don't reply to this message. I'll contact everyone again with the next available collection window.
Your pieces might need to be collected from Arana Hills or Stafford. I will let you know
Collection Windows
As Shontal Ceramic is a one-person business, collections are available during scheduled collection windows only.
Each week, I'll offer one or more 2-hour collection windows. The day and time will vary from week to week (for example Tuesday 5:00–7:00 pm, Thursday 12:00–2:00 pm or Sunday 5:00–7:00 pm) to give everyone a fair opportunity to collect their work.
If you can't attend one week's collection window, that's absolutely fine. Simply wait for the next collection window, or arrange for a friend or family member to collect your pieces on your behalf.
Unfortunately, I can no longer arrange individual collection appointments or respond to multiple collection messages, as this is no longer manageable while running the business.
Collection Instructions
During the scheduled collection window:
Come to building
Buzz my Unit number
I'll let you into the building.
Come upstairs to Level 1.
Your pieces will be waiting in a bag with your name on it.
Important
Please only attend during the advertised collection window.
Outside these times, I may be teaching workshops, working, attending appointments or unavailable, so I won't be able to assist with collections.
Collection Timeframe
Please collect your pieces within 3 weeks of being notified that they're ready (4 weeks at the latest).
As my home studio has limited storage space and new workshops are held every week, pieces that remain uncollected for an extended period may be disposed of or donated if no collection arrangements have been made.
Thank you for your understanding and support. This collection system allows me to spend more time creating and teaching, while still providing regular opportunities for everyone to collect their work.
Minimum Numbers
Public workshop dates require a minimum of 3 guests to run.
If this number isn’t reached, you’ll be notified one day prior via email or SMS and offered the option to reschedule or receive a refund.

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 3 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we may cancel the session; if that happens, we'll inform you and let you choose between a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.

  • 5/5 from Michaela Hock, attended Jul 2026: The Wheel Throwing Introduction Workshop was amazing and we had a lot of fun creating unique pieces. I was surprised how difficult wheel throwing actually is but Shontal is an amazing teacher and guided us patiently and with a good sense of humour through every step. She made us aware of potential common mistakes helping us to prevent them and made sure we understood the reasons behind her recommendations. The class was small with only 6 people which allowed Shontal to support each of us individually.I can highly recommend this workshop and would do it any time again. Thanks Shontal for a lovely Saturday afternoon!

  • 5/5 from Simmone Miszuk, attended Jul 2026: Shontel is an amazing teacher. She breaks the whole process down and explains it so well, step by step. She makes sure everyone is looked after and creates a lovely group energy. She is calm and patient and available for everyone individually as they need throughout the lesson. We all came away with a piece we were proud of and excited to collect from Shontel after she is lovely enough to arrange kilning. Communication is amazing, great instructions on getting there and collection of our Pottery pieces. Would highly recommend and even do again. Shontel is the best. Thanks Shontel.

  • 5/5 from Amarinda Bazeley, attended May 2026: Shontal is a fantastic instructor! Very warm and friendly and made us all feel very comfortable despite being complete beginners. • 5/5 from Vivianne Kay, attended Apr 2026: We attended this class (hubby and I) as it was a gift from our son for our birthdays. We found Shontal to be lovely and very knowledgeable about her craft and very willing to show you everything she knew. She went through the steps with us first and then showed us how she did it step by step on the wheel and then we got the chance to make a pot on the wheel! It went from being scary to having the confidence to turn up the speed and do things we never thought we could with clay! In the end we both had cute looking pots that we made and decorated. We cant wait to pickup the finished pots - the waiting will be the hardest thing but we enjoyed the class and the 3 hours went by very quick as we were so busy creating. If you have never tried wheel pottery you should - as its fun and very different to other pottery styles.

My name is Shontal, I am a passionate ceramic artist based in Stafford, Australia. I was born in Jordan and moved to Australia in 2001.
My love for ceramics dates back to my childhood when I used to accompany my mother to ceramic classes in Jordan. My journey into the world of ceramics began in May 2021, starting with hand building techniques, but I soon found myself fascinated by the art of throwing on the wheel. Being so in love with pottery, I took the bold step of acquiring my own wheel and began perfecting my throwing skills at my home studio.
My dedication to mastering the art of ceramics led me to explore glazing techniques with a keen interest in Amaco and Maco glazes. While progressing in my pottery journey, I unexpectedly found myself drawn back to hand building, finding it to be an incredibly relaxing and therapeutic experience. Slab hand building became my canvas for crafting unique and beautiful designs, especially in creating captivating mugs. More recently, I have ventured into the realm of coil hand building, resulting in the creation of some stunning large bowls.
Initially, I attended various schools in Brisbane, such as Mas And Meik and Indooroopilly Ceramic Studios, to grasp the basics of ceramics. However, as my skills evolved, I took the initiative to self-educate myself further by exploring different techniques online.
Japanese pottery has captured my heart, and I have started incorporating the Japanese style into my ceramic creations. My artistic inclinations lean toward the allure of matte glazes, intriguing textures, and the art of stamping, carving, and utilizing the sodium silicate technique.
I prefer using white stoneware clay, which I skilfully enhance with Iron Oxide and Cobalt Oxide stains, adding depth and character to my pieces.
In summary, my artistic journey is one of passion, dedication, and continuous exploration. My ceramics beautifully showcase my love for Japanese influence, intriguing textures, and captivating glazing techniques. As I continue to evolve and innovate in my home studio, my work is sure to inspire and delight anyone who appreciates the beauty of handmade ceramics.
